 Star Trek Starfleet Academy First Pictures/Teaser Trailer First Impressions


This past week the first pictures and trailer for the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series have been released.  As much as I'm not really that interested in the series overall I've decided to take a look at the pictures and trailer and share my initial thoughts.


Holly Hunter as Captain Nahla Ake, a part-Lanthanite and the commandant of Starfleet Academy

Ok.  She appears to be sitting on a very SNW-esque bridge.  Lanthanite is obviously a reference to Pelia (Carol Kane) in SNW


Robert Picardo returning as the EMH from Voyager and Prodigy

He has a unique uniform...maybe a professor emeritus or something?


Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, returning from Discovery

The logical guess would be as an engineering professor.  Very Discovery-esque uniform, though slightly different.


Gina Yashere as Cmdr. Lura Thot, a half Klingon/half Jem Hadar

Interesting.  Maybe we'll get some lore building about both species at this point in time?

Not Sure about the new cadet uniforms, the delta on the side is a little much.

Those combadges (tricom badges?) aren't really doing it for me.

Nice to see that we're back to "real" Klingons (appearance-wise).  Also...a Klingon in a sciences blue uniform...kay.

Looks like some cadets in casual wear.  In a mess hall maybe?

Lots of names on this wall, including many legacy characters.  Memberberries?  Fan Service?  Interesting the ranks listed.  Wonder if those are the final ranks of those officers? *The trailer has even better views of this wall*



Paul Giamatti as the half-Klingon half-Tellarite bad guy.
Not much to say until we know more about him.

Getting heavy SNW/kelvin vibes from the set.  On that note: can we PLEASE STOP with the shiny gloss-ass floors?

Hard to see much here because of the lighting.




The Trailer

My thoughts:  So this is in the 32nd century Discover far future time period.  The first Starfleet Academy class in over a century (probably since The Burn).  A building labelled the "James T. Kirk Pavilion" is a nice callback to "simpler times".  Nice view of the "memorial wall".  The cadets chanting "Duty! Honor! Service!" doesn't really strike me as very "Starfleet".  Holly Hunter's inspirational speech about the future, the reason for being in Starfleet, the dream, etc. strikes me as very reminiscent of Una's speech in the beginning of SNW's pilot.  And of course they just had to say "boldly go where no one has gone before."  Also, it is nice to see the DS9/VOY title font back, especially after nutrek's overuse of the TOS font.  And then there's Paul Giamatti's character whistling the TOS theme melody...  Overall this teaser trailer doesn't give us much more than eye candy, so I can't really judge anything from it.  The future will tell...

Star Trek Discovery Retrospective: Season 2

Season 2 Picking up from season 1’s cliffhanger ending (the arrival of the USS Enterprise) season 2 immediately jumps into a new world-ending, galaxy spanning threat story arc with the red signals, the red angel suit time travel stuff and later section 31/Control and the sphere data. With so much going on story wise it felt a bit incoherent to me. The dark tone of season 1 was eschewed in favor of a brighter feel and a bit more closeness with established canon. The seemingly fan-service opening of the premiere with the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 under Captain Pike turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the one good thing to come out of season 2 was Anson Mount as Captain Pike and ultimately Star Trek Strange New Worlds. That said the redesign (and obvious scale-up) of the classic USS Enterprise NCC-1701 to fit the modern Discovery aesthetic was another major point of consternation with the fandom.
