Thoughts on the Future of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds


I've been hesitating on addressing this, but it's time.  When Paramount recently announced the official release date for Strange New Worlds season 3 they simultaneously confirmed season 4 being in production AND the renewal of the series for season 5.  They also announced that season 5 would be the final season, and that it would be shortened from the normal 10 episodes to 6 episodes.  

While I am sad that the series will be ending, I am not surprised.  With the series premise being a five year mission under captain Pike it is only logical that the fifth season would be the last.  Also this follows the trend of Star Trek streaming series running for 5 years (Discovery, Lower Decks).

Looking forward I can only hope that TPTB continue to steer the show toward the buildup to the handover of the Enterprise from Pike to Kirk.  I mused on this in a previous post Here.  I personally would like to see an ending with a refit of the Enterprise to prepare it for Kirk's five year mission (and a bigger crew: 430 up from 203) that would at least in some way start to bring it visually in line with TOS.  What I don't want to see is a reimaging/remake of The Original Series.  We don't need that.  No interested.

What we know (from trailers and behind the scenes sources):

-Scotty (Martin Quinn) introduced in the season 2 finale "Hegemony" will continue aboard the Enterprise

-More James T. Kirk

-Another promotion for Uhura at some point to bring her rank in line with TOS

-Season 4 expected premier in mid 2026 *nothing firm yet*

-Season 5 will begin production later in 2025


As more information is released it will be posted to the blog as time allows.

Star Trek Discovery Retrospective: Season 2

Season 2 Picking up from season 1’s cliffhanger ending (the arrival of the USS Enterprise) season 2 immediately jumps into a new world-ending, galaxy spanning threat story arc with the red signals, the red angel suit time travel stuff and later section 31/Control and the sphere data. With so much going on story wise it felt a bit incoherent to me. The dark tone of season 1 was eschewed in favor of a brighter feel and a bit more closeness with established canon. The seemingly fan-service opening of the premiere with the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 under Captain Pike turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the one good thing to come out of season 2 was Anson Mount as Captain Pike and ultimately Star Trek Strange New Worlds. That said the redesign (and obvious scale-up) of the classic USS Enterprise NCC-1701 to fit the modern Discovery aesthetic was another major point of consternation with the fandom.
