On Star Trek Nemesis
Star Trek: Nemesis
Star Trek Nemesis. Not my favorite Star Trek movie. In fact, my least favorite TNG movie and my least favorite of the first 10 trek movies. Some of my biggest grievances with the movie:
Shinzon. Not the strongest trek movie villian. The basic concept is not a bad one, a corrupt/ "evil" clone of Picard, a mirror for Picard (paralleling B4 being a "mirror" of sorts for Data), but I feel like the message would have been stronger if Shinzon had just been a straight mirror, not a clone that looks different because he was never "aged up" to Picard's age (to explain away the visual differences between the actors. Nothing against Tom Hardy, but I firmly believe that it would have been better and simpler to have had Patrick Stewart play Shinzon. And Patrick Stewart is a high enough caliber actor to play both Picard and Shinzon.
The "truck chase" scene. Not my favorite scene. Not a bad scene necessarily, but - and others have agreed with me on this - it just does not fit in a Star Trek movie. As Star Trek 2009, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Section 31 have showed us, heavy action scenes do not good Star Trek make.
The "mental rape" scene. Really? As distasteful as the whole scene is, this is not the first time Deanna Troi has been "mentally violated". TNGs 'Survivors', 'Violations' and "Man of the People' all come to mind. On top of that the dialog in the next scene in sickbay just doesn't sit well at all:
Troi: It was a... it was a violation. Shinzon's Viceroy seems to have the ability to reach into my thoughts. I've become a liability. I request to be relieved of my duties.
Picard: Permission denied. If you can endure more of these assaults, I need you at my side now, more than ever. ...
Really? If you can endure more of these assaults?? Excuse me?? What?? Let's substitute the word "assault" for what it really is: "rape". A commanding officer, Picard of all people asking an officer and friend if they can "endure more of these rapes" What the f*%# writers??
Killing off Data. Now I know that killing off Data was Brent Spiner's idea, that he was ready to be done playing Data *cough Star Trek Picard cough* but to me especially, with Data being my favorite TNG character and one of my two top favorite characters in all of Star Trek, Data's death was really off-putting to me. Especially as it was meant to be final (B4 and Star Trek Picard notwithstanding). I know that it was off-putting to a lot of the fans especially since Data is such a popular character.
