Star Trek Strange New Worlds
Season 3 Reaction: Episode 6
The Sehlat Who Ate It's Tail
So we start onboard the Farragut. We finally get to see the real James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) which is cool at this point. It's fun to see Enterprise and another ship working together. The away team beaming into the corridor of the damaged USS Farragut (including Scotty talking about the damage and heading to engineering) really reminds me of the Enterprise away team beaming into the corridor of the severely damaged USS Constellation in TOS "The Doomsday Machine". Paul Wesley does a pretty good job as "TOS Kirk": his mannerisms, delivery, without being over the top. As one who was hitherto skeptical of Paul Wesley as "new Kirk", I was pleasantly surprised, and dare I say, I would like to see more. The phone thing is kinda funny, especially with the triple split screen. The twist at the end was cool, with the "scavengers" being the descendants of humans who left Earth in the 21st century. It was also very Trek, thought provoking and a neat look at Treks past (the era of WWIII).
Observation: The diagonal Jeffries Tube Scotty works in on the Farragut is definitely inspired by the oft-seen one on the Enterprise in TOS. The way Kirk (Paul Wesley) reclines in the captain's chair and crosses his leg and taps the arm of the chair is straight out of TOS. The hull of the scavenger ship having a UESPA logo from Star Trek Enterprise was a nice touch, as was the registry XCV-100, a nice nod to the semi-canonical (?) XCV-330 Enterprise "ring ship". Blink and you'll miss it: the Farragut bridge has gooseneck viewers, a la "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Cool!
Opinions: this episode may be the best of the season so far. The scene with Kirk and Spock in the ready room and the later scene with Kirk and Pike in the ready room were both VERY Star Trek. We can also really star to see the genesis of some of the relationships between the TOS characters (Kirk and Scotty, Kirk and Uhura, Kirk and Spock)
