Trek Throwback Thursday: Star Trek on Gameboy (and Game Gear)
The Gameboy, Nintendo's super popular handheld. The juggernaut that built the handheld gaming market. Nintendo's Gameboy and it's competitor from Sega gave us three Star Trek games, one set in the TOS era and two in the TNG era.

Despite sharing the name, this is not in fact a port of Star Trek 25th Anniversary for the NES. This action/shoot 'em up game consists of a combination of space shoot 'em up and planetside adventure maze levels, culminating in fighting the Doomsday Machine (from the eponymous TOS episode). An ok game, the gameplay is a bit basic (necessity of being on the Gameboy), and as such the replay value suffers.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Developed by: Imagineering Inc.

Released: 1993
This is an almost direct port of the NES Star Trek: The Next Generation game, with a few graphic assets changed and many simplified for the smaller screen and four shade grayscale (greenscale) of the Gameboy. Other minor changes include a different set of names from TNG episodes used as level passwords. Beyond that, the gameplay and controls are essentially identical to the NES game. A port was also released for the Sega Game Gear in 1994.

Star Trek: Generations: Beyond the Nexus
Developed by: Absolute Entertainment
Published by: Absolute Entertainment
Released: 1994
Based on the same game engine from Absolute's Star Trek: The Next Generation game, this game very loosely follows the plot of Star Trek: Generations (with several additions including space battles with the Romulans and Tholians) and adds new gameplay elements and a new setting-the early parts take place onboard the USS Enterprise-B. Star Trek Generations: Beyond the Nexus also supports basic color graphics when played through the Super Gameboy for the SNES. Like Absolute's Star Trek: The Next Generation, Beyond the Nexus was also ported to the Sega Game Gear (with color graphics).
