The Fandom: a Rant

The Fandom: a Rant

There's something I need to get off my chest: people need to take a chill pill.  You and I may not like some Star Trek series and love others, and that's fine.  You don't have to like every series that is released.  Just because you don't like a certain series doesn't mean everyone hates it.  Bad is subjective.  Some people like lower decks and Prodigy.  I personally do not.  I really like SNW, some people in this comments section obviously do not.  I am also not a fan of Enterprise or very much of Voyager, two series that were produced during the Berman Era.  I love SNW, a Kurtzman Era show.  Regardless, whether you or I like the newer shows or not, they're still Star Trek, and still canon.  Deal with it.  I personally despise Section 31, Into Darkness, and most of Discovery (first 4 seasons).  I still accept that they are and always will be part of the franchise and canon.  You and I as viewers DO NOT get to decide what is and is not canon and how they fit in to the timeline.  Just because you don't like Discovery and don't personally consider it 'canon', doesn't mean it's not canon.  And no one cares.  Deal with it.  If you don't like a certain Trek series, do what I did with the ones I didn't like: DON'T WATCH IT!  And move on with your life.  I shouldn't need to say this but just because you don't like a certain Star Trek series, that doesn't mean everyone has to share your negative opinion and hate it.  As far as online discussions, comment sections, and review videos: if you can't provide something at least constructive and are just there to spew the same tired negativity you've been spreading since 2017: don't post.  Please don't ruin it for everyone else.  If you don't like some episodes (or even all) of Strange New Worlds, that's fine.  Don't ruin it for everyone else.  Some people like myself are actually trying to enjoy it.  I am tired of going on a discussion board (like TrekBBS) or the comment section of a YouTube video to see others opinions and seeing nothing but constant hate for all of NuTrek, hate for Kurtzman and company at Secret Hideout, hate for J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot, negativity about the future of the franchise and just generally endless vitriol about how the franchise is doomed and the powers that be can't put out anything good.  If all you're going to do is repeat the same hate and vitriol for the franchise that we've already been hearing for the last 8 years: SHUT UP. Just shut up.  Strange New Worlds only even existed because the fans wanted it (and amazingly the franchise executives actually listened to us).  To turn around and continuously shit on the show just because of one or two bad episodes or poor story or character decisions comes off as ungrateful.

I think the fandom of late have really lost sight of a simple truth: Star Trek is a work of fiction.  Fiction.  Written by many people over many years in its many iterations.  The people making Star Trek are humans not robots.  They're not perfect.  They're going to make mistakes.  Yes there are internal inconsistencies and canon issues that pop up from time to time. Yes there are some stories and episodes and plotlines that could have been done better.  Yes there are some episodes/movies that are total stinkers.  Truth be told, many of the same people who complain about these things would probably bitch about a Star Trek series with all 10 out of 10 stories and perfectly consistent canon being bland and boring.
