TNG Episode Tier List Season 5
TNG Episode Tier ListSeason 5
Definitely A tier. Denise Crosby is back as Sela, the daughter of Yesterday’s Enterprise Tasha Yar, plus the Duras Sisters and Data’s first time in command. Good stuff.
102 Darmok
Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra. Good episode, good premise. A
103 Ensign Ro
Introducing Michelle Forbes as Ro Laren. In a very non Roddenberry turn the writers worked in some conflict for our main characters, also building the backstory for DS9. A
104 Silicon Avatar
It’s ok. Decent Data episode. Dr. Marr was kinda mean toward Data, also the fact that she destroyed the Crystalline entity. It was nice to see the Crystalline Entity again. B
105 Disaster
A fun episode. Some good character stuff. Picard stuck in the turbolift with the kids, Worf delivering Keiko’s baby, Troi in command. B
106 The Game
An addictive alien game takes over the crew. Other than the fact that Wesley comes back to save the day, yawn. C
108 Unification Part 1
S Tier. Marc Lenard is back as Sarek, Picard and Data go to Romulus to find Spock. Anytime we get to see Nimoy.
107 Unification part 2
S Tier. Spock!!! The Spock and Picard, Spock and Data stuff was great, also Sela is back.
109 A Matter of Time
Good episode, Fun time travel concept without our characters actually time travelling. Matt Frewer was good as Professor Rasmussen. Overall: B
110 New Ground
Enterprise tests a new method of propulsion which goes wrong, Worf tries to form a father son bond with alexander. Has its moments, but overall pretty forgettable. C
111 Hero Worship
A child, the only survivor of a crippled science ship begins imitating Data. Silliness aside, it’s actually ok in the way the episode looks at mental trauma, loss, and children. B
112 Violations
The telepathic rape episode. I never really cared for this one. Somewhat dark for trek. Not particularly memorable either, fortunately. C
113 The Masterpiece Society
The genetically engineered “perfect” society literally living in a bubble. Interesting to see their attitude towards Geordi, an “imperfect” blind man. B
114 Conundrum
The ship gets hit by an energy beam, the crew all get amnesia, and they get lured into an alien interstellar war. I actually liked this one. Cool concept. B
115 Power Play
Troi, Data and O’Brien get taken over by alien beings, they try to take over the Enterprise. Good, but not particularly memorable. C
116 Ethics
Not a fan of this one. The back and forth between Crusher and the visiting doctor, and the visiting doctor's reluctance to try a procedure that could save Worfs life, plus the fact it was pretty obvious from the outset that he would be ok (being a main character). B
117 The Outcast
Really not a fan of this one. Berman era Treks half-assed attempt to take on the topic of sexual preference/sexual identity was just that, half-assed. Plus the way the story is written in the end it makes Riker look like shit. D
118 Cause and Effect
Great episode, Great concept (the time loop). Not something that could be done again on other shows without seeming derivative. Also Kelsey Grammar guest stars. A
119 The First Duty
Great episode, good story, great use of Wesley. We actually get to see Starfleet Academy and meet Boothby. Great take on the value of the truth and personal integrity. There’s a reason the US Air Force Academy uses this episode as a teaching tool. A
120 Cost Of Living
Lwaxana episode. Mehh… The holodeck stuff I felt was a bit goofy, especially with everything else going on on the ship. Lwaxana and Alexander was...interesting. Not particularly memorable. C
121 The Perfect Mate
Granted it has some elements of TOS Elaan of Troyus, but still a good episode. Famke Janssen was good in this one. The story was good, the Ferengi were not overused or too annoying, overall an enjoyable episode. B
122 Imaginary Friend
A child’s imaginary friend becomes real vis-a-vis an energy being in a nebula. Fine episode, not great, not by any means bad. The child actors were fine, even got a little interaction with Alexander. B
123 I, Borg
An interesting new take on the Borg. Also the moral dilemma of using Hugh to send a virus to the collective and essentially commit genocide. Love that Picard and Guinan both start the episode hating the Borg but later come to understand Hugh. I give this one an A.
124 The Next Phase
Geordi and Ro are presumed dead but actually are out of phase with the ship and have to fight for their lives and the ship’s survival. Interesting original premise. Good world building for Ro. And of course Romulans. B
125 The Inner Light
Wow. One of those rare episodes that transcends great Trek into the realm of great scifi. Picard gets zapped by an energy beam from an alien probe, in the space of 30 minutes he lives the entire adult life memories of a man from the planet the probe came from. In the end all he has left are the memories and the flute. S no question.
126 Time's Arrow Part 1
The season ending cliffhanger. Time travel but with a really good twist: Data’s head has been found a mile beneath San Francisco in the 24th century, but it’s been down there since the late 19th. Answering the question of how and what does it all mean sends the crew back to turn of the 20th century Earth to save Earth’s future in the past. Some good Picard/Guinan stuff here too. A
