I. SUMMARY OF INCURSION

On Earth date 25 May 2262, stardate 2491.5 the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 under Captain Christopher Pike was sent to Ithaxus observe and take detailed sensor readings of an interstellar squall, a rare space-time phenomenon.  Arriving at the phenomenon the Enterprise detected a distress call from within the phenomenon and moved to investigate.  Becoming trapped in the phenomenon the Enterprise was sent across nearly 100 lightyears and backwards in time 65 million years to the Sol System during Earth's Cretaceous period.  In this time period Mars was inhabited by a technologically advanced civilization, a ship from which locked a tractor web onto the damaged USS Enterprise.  An away team from Enterprise used phasers to burn several trees and Stun a dinosaur on prehistoric Earth.  Captain Pike negotiated with the Martian ship commander to release the Enterprise.  The Martial Commander Cassell told Pike that Mars is at war with the Dol'drm, an arachnid species from the fifth planet.  Pike urged Cassell to let the Enterprise try a diplomatic solution to the conflict.  After discovering Pike withholding the truth about the Enterprise's future origin Cassell stole an antimatter pod to use as a weapon against the Dol'drm.  The Enterprise pursued the Martian ship to the Dol'drm planet, located between Mars and Jupiter to attempt to prevent the destruction of the planet by Enterprise technology.  At the last moment Pike ordered the Enterprise to stand down and not fire on the Martian ship.  Pike's personal logs indicated that this was a hunch, Pike having realized that in the 23rd century there is no planet between Mars and Jupiter.  Lieutenant Spock devised a way to use the energy release from the planets destruction to break the quantum entanglement keeping the Enterprise at that point in time, returning the ship to the 23rd century.  Following these events Admiral Robert April and Captain Christopher Pike agreed with the directive of the Federation Council that all mission reports and data pertaining to this event should be classified.

Temporal Displacement: approximately 65 million years

II. VIOLATIONS

After a close review of classified mission logs and Captain Pike's and Commander Una Chin-Riley's personal logs, and taking into account the extreme temporal displacement, any violations (Pike revealing information about Starfleet and the Federation to the Martians, Una Chin-Riley and La'an Noonien Singh using phaser weapons on a dinosaur) are ultimately non sequitur.

III. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Potential contamination/damage to the timeline: none

Predestination: The Enterprise's travel to prehistoric Earth allowed the Martian ship to obtain (steal) the antimatter pod used to destroy the Dol'drm planet.  As Captain Pike surmised, since there is no Dol'drm planet in the 23rd century the planet is supposed to be destroyed and become the Sol System's asteroid belt.  According to Lieutenant Spock's logs, the resulting gravitational changes in Sol caused Earth and Mars to move farther from the sun, causing Mars to cool and become lifeless and Earth to experience an ice age.  in addition, one of the largest fragments of the Dol'drm planet became the Chicxulub asteroid, impacting Earth on the future Yucatan peninsula and causing the extinction of the dinosaurs (and allowing ultimately the evolution of humanity).  Additionally, the distress call detected by the Enterprise from within the anomaly was in fact the same one sent by the Enterprise from within the anomaly after becoming trapped.

It is the recommendation of The Department of Temporal Investigations that this time travel event and all reports and data related thereto, including this report should remain classified level 10.

This report is final.
