Tomorrows Enterprise

Uhura has returned to the Enterprise from a refresher course while the Enterprise is examining a white hole.  Uhura detects a signal right before an energy wave hits the Enterprise-music.  After being treated for minor injuries in sickbay Uhura returns to her quarters.  She continues to hear voices-Scotty yelling.  She consults with La'an who believes the Uhura may be experiencing something time travel related.  In the science lab she traces the source of the message she detected on the bridge and ends up making contact with herself.  On the other side, The Enterprise is examining a newly formed black hole.  This enterprise is about a year in the future.  Kirk is in command, Dr. Boyce is acting chief medical officer.  Uhura and Scotty are in a relationship.  Uhura, Scotty and a visiting Ortegas take a shuttle into the black hole.  Uhura detects a signal-music.  An energy surge hits the shuttle, injuring Uhura.  Uhura beams back to the Enterprise, but is transported a year into the future.  In this future Scotty is dead.  While analyzing the signals from the black hole she make contact with herself from two years in the past.  The two Uhuras have to work together to correct the future (and save Scotty).  Both Uhuras talk to Spock in engineering.  Both Uhuras work to synthesize a dilithium diamond, the 2262 Uhura starting it and the 2263 Uhura finding it complete.  On the bridge another pulse hits both ships causing the two Uhuras to swap places.  As both Enterprises prepare to fire weapons to escape the White/Black holes, the two Uhuras talk with their opposites captains.  Future Uhura  confides in Captain Pike and tells him what's going on.  Future Kirk and Chapel talk about past Uhura being from a year ago and how Scotty dies.  Past Uhura makes a connection between the music signals received from the black and white holes and a mural on the wall in her quarters.  With the Universal Translator she deciphers the message-a being is being birthed in the black hole.  To solve the dilemma they have to help deliver a space-baby.  Uhura goes out in a spacesuit to plant drones and help move the space baby out of breach.  After successfully communicating with the energy beings in the black hole  she launches the drones.  From the bridge Chapel talks her through the procedure.  After one of the drones disconnects Uhura enters the anomaly.  Inside the anomaly the two Uhuras meet.  Together they turn the space baby and allow it to be born.  Suddenly both appear on a facimile of the Enterprise bridge.  They receive a message from the entities within the anomaly.  The beings exist outside of linear time.  They send the two Uhuras back to their correct times.  Future Uhura materializes on her enterprise followed by Ortegas and Scotty.  Uhura and Scotty share a kiss.  In the briefing room the senior staffv play a poker game.  In 2262 Uhura enjoys dinner with the senior staff in Pikes quarters.   

An Uhura episode.  These are all to rare (TOS never had one) and this is the first since season 2.  The future versions of the Enterprise give us a small glimpse of alternate versions of the Kirk-era ship we all know and love.  Uhura's uniform, hair and makeup as TOS era Uhura is pretty good.  Chapels blue uniform and hairdo very much echo Majel Barrett in The Original Series.  The space baby element reminds me a little bit of TNG's "Galaxys Child".  The entities existing outside of linear time and their ability to transport both Uhuras across time and into a "limbo" is definitely reminiscent of DS9's prophets.  Despite heavily focusing on two versions of the Enterprise crew, the episode is by an large an Uhura episode.  Through the journey Uhura learns to both cherish the present and look toward the future.  The time travel element is fun and yet not overcomplicated (also well balanced with plenty of other science bits worthy of a Berman-era trek episode).  Overall a fun, deep, refreshing episode and a good end to a wild ride of a season.
